RULES OF THE ROAD

Safety is our top priority — for you, your passengers, and our island.

Block Island is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. These Rules of the Road exist to keep everyone safe while protecting our island community. Please review them carefully before operating any rental.

Before you ride or drive:

Failure to follow these rules may result in fines, towing, or termination of rental without refund.

🛵 MOPED RULES

  • Helmets and eye protection are mandatory for both driver and passenger
    → Minimum $85 fine if caught without
  • Valid driver’s license must be carried
  • Mopeds may carry a maximum of two (2) passengers
  • Mopeds may only be operated by authorized drivers listed on the rental agreement
  • Mopeds may not be ridden:
    • Between 8:00 PM (or dark) and 8:30 AM
    • On dirt roads
  • Mopeds must be parked only in legal parking spaces
  • Excessive horn use will result in a minimum $50 fine
    (Horn is for necessary safety warnings only)
  • Drivers must comply with all town and Rhode Island state laws
  • Pregnant guests may not ride mopeds
  • Infants and toddlers are not permitted
  • Children must be able to reach the footrests
    • Average minimum height: 42 inches (varies by model and child)

🚲 BICYCLE RULES

  • Helmets are strongly recommended for all riders
  • Helmets are mandatory for children under 16 (Rhode Island law)
  • Pregnant guests may not ride bicycles
  • Children under 18 months may not ride bicycles or use biggie attachments
  • Ride on the right side of the road
  • Travel in single file
  • Be aware of traffic approaching from behind
  • Stop at all stop signs
  • Park bicycles only at designated bike racks

🚗 MOTOR VEHICLE & JEEP RULES

These rules apply to all rental vehicles, including cars and jeeps.

  • No off-roading
  • No beach driving
  • The following roads are off-limits to all rental vehicles due to road conditions:
    • Coast Guard Road
    • West Beach Road
    • Snake Hole Road
  • 4-wheel drive has been disabled on all jeeps
  • Tow fines start at $350 minimum
  • Seat belts are mandatory
    • One seat belt required per passenger
    • Vehicles range from 2 to 7 passengers
  • Jeep doors must remain on the vehicle
  • Jeep tops may not be removed or replaced without assistance from:
    • Old Harbor Bike Shop staff, or
    • Boat Basin Rentals staff
  • Vehicles must be parked only in legal parking spaces
  • Only authorized drivers may operate the vehicle
  • Valid driver’s license must be carried
  • Drivers must comply with all town and state regulations
